about

To some it might seem like Emancipator just stepped on the scene recently but for those who haven’t who haven’t lived under a rock the young producer is a well-known and appreciated artist since he released his debut “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough” at the age of 19 on Hydeout Productions, Japan.
His mentor Nujabes became a close friend and was also responsible for the mastering of his debut record. His first professional gig in the U.S. was opening for Bonobo, one of his biggest influences in electronic music. Both of these artists represent the musical pillars of his productions. His organic approach to instrumental music & consequent denial of mass media (besides the internet) have proven his musical value.

On stage, Emancipator, aka Douglas Appling performs with the violinist Ilya Goldberg, creating a dynamic and captivating vibe that reinforces the fusion at the heart of Emancipator’s music.

His newest album release “Dusk To Dawn” continues right where Emancipators 2nd album “Safe In The Steep Cliffs” left off. A lovely return towards soulful combinations of organic Hip Hop and symphonic layers by using various string instruments, choir music and globally- tinged beats. Blending lush & warm electronic sounds with Hip Hop and classical Americana might not be an easy or obvious choice but the classically-trained Emancipator (started playing the violin when he was 4 years old) does just that, creating a natural mix of beats and
melody that is all his own.
